The Washington Redskins Fall In OT To The Atlanta Falcons 25-19

on

The Washington Redskins’ defense had a stellar performance pressuring Matt Ryan, forcing the Atlanta Falcons in to turnovers, and pretty much shutting down the NFL’s most potent passing game.  In the end, it was Deja vu all over again as the Redskins blew a lead, battled back, but then fall in OT to the Atlanta Falcons.

The Redskins dominated the first half holding the Falcons to 3 points.  The Redskins jumped out to an early 7 – 0 lead as a steady Kirk Cousins finished a 12 play 67 yard drive with a 7 yard TD pass to Derek Carrier.   The Falcons made a FG to bring it to 7 – 3, but they blew two opportunities to take the lead.

The second half was a defensive battle until the Falcons used a strong running game to go 91 yards in 11 plays.  The drive was capped when Julio Jones recovered a Devonta Freeman fumble in the end zone.  The Falcons missed a two point try, but held a 12-7 lead.

Kirk Cousins quickly brought the Redskins back as a pass interference call gave the Skins the ball on the Falcons’ 2 yard line.  Matt Jones raced around the right side for a TD to give the Redskins the lead.  The Redskins missed a 2pt attempt, but had a 13-12 lead.

The Falcons ensuing drive was stopped as the Redskins’ Bashaud Breeland picked off  Matt Ryan.  Breeland returned the ball to the Falcons’ 20.  The Redskins offense was not able to capitalize on the Turnover and the skins were forced to kick a FG to take a 16-12 lead with 2:42 left in the game.

With 2:38 left and only 1 time out, Matt Ryan and the Falcons drove 80 yards and picked apart the depleted Redskins secondary.  Ryan threw what looked like a 13 yard strike to Devonta Freeman giving the Falcons a lead, but Freeman dropped the ball before crossing the goal line.  The Falcons quickly converted a 4th and 2 then Freeman took a handoff and ran 6 punishing yards for a TD and the lead.  The extra point gave the Falcons a 19-16 lead.

The Redskins had life and one last opportunity with 24 seconds left, and Kirk Cousins put them in FG range where Hopkins nailed a 52 yard FG to tie the game 19-19.

Kirk Cousins Leads Redskins against Falcons

The Redskins won the toss and took the ball.   Kirk Cousins was leading the Redskins down the field, but pressure forced Cousins to throw a terrible pass that was intercepted and returned 59 yards for a game winning TD by the Falcons.

Cousins finished the day  21-32 for 219 yards 1 TD and 2 costly interceptions.

The Redskins defense finished with 3 sacks, 2 interceptions, and a fumble.  They held Julio Jones to 5 catches and kept him out of the end zone.

The Washington Redskins fall to 2-3, and will be on the road Oct 18 against the New York Jets.
