Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins Comeback To Beat Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Washington Redskins record the greatest comeback in franchise history beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-30.  The Redskins seemed to be all but done, and fans loudly booed Kirk Cousins.  But, great coaching, good defense, and steady QB play help the Redskins battled back from an early 24-0 deficit to turn a blowout into a historic win.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used a strong running game, sharp passing, and defense to take a 24-0 lead.  Doug Martin gashed the Redskins’ run defense early, Rookie Jameis Winston threw two TD passes, and Tampa’s defense forced a Kirk Cousins’ fumble, and returned it for a TD.  The Buccaneers were up quick, but the Redskins stuck to their plan.

Before the end of the half, Cousins got the Redskins on the board with an 8 yard TD run.  He led the Redskins on a 7 play 74 yard drive to make the score 24-7 before the half.

The Redskins, who have been outplayed in the 3rd quarter of their games, dominated the 3rd period outscoring the Buccaneers 14-0.  The Redskins recovered an onside kick, and Kirk Cousins threw 2 short TD passes to Ryan Grant and Jordan Reed to cut the deficit to 24-21.  The Redskins’ defense lost Ryan Kerrigan to a broken hand, but they came together and held Tampa Bay scoreless in the 3rd.

Washington and Tampa Bay exchanged field goals midway through the 4th quarter to make the score 27-24.  Tampa Bay ate up much of the 4th quarter driving 91 yards in 11 plays.  It looked like the game was going to be over, but the Redskins defense made a goal line stand holding the Buccaneers to a FG to make the score 30-24 with 2:24 left to play.

Kirk Cousins started the final drive by completing two quick passes before the 2 minute warning.   Cousins hit 4 more passes to get the Redskins inside the Bucs’ 35.   Cousins dropped a dime to Jamison Crowder to give the Redskins a first and goal with 36 seconds to play.   On 3rd down with 28 seconds to go, Cousins hit Jordan Reed on a slant for a 6 yard TD to tie the score 30-30.  Dustin Hopkins hit the extra point to give the Redskins a 31-30 lead.

The Buccaneers had 24 seconds and no timeouts to get into FG range.  Jameis Winston hit 3 quick passes, but the Bucs made a big mistake trying to lateral the ball.  The Redskins recovered sealing the largest comeback in Washington Redskins’ history.

Kirk Cousins had a remarkable day and finished completing a franchise record of 33-40 for 317 yards and 3 TD’s.  Even better, Cousins had no interceptions.

Entering a bye week, The Washington Redskins move to 3-4.
