Are The Carolina Panthers Really The Worst Undefeated NFL Team?

on

The Carolina Panthers are one of six undefeated teams left in the NFL this season, but it doesn’t seem that way because they still aren’t getting respect from the media. They are being called the worst of the bunch. Who are the other undefeated teams? The New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals, and Atlanta Falcons.

Let’s go back 12 years to the 2003 season where the Panthers also started 4-0. That season was all about the “Cardiac Cats” and they ended the regular season with a 12-4 record. Unfortunately the postseason ended with a 32-29 loss to the Patriots in the Super Bowl, but they went to the Super Bowl!

I think that most of the media forgot about the 2003 season because this is what’s being said about the Carolina Panthers… (As of 10/6/2015)

  • Yahoo Sports – “But if we have to pick one of The Undefeated Six to miss the playoffs, it has to be the Carolina Panthers. Are you totally sold? Cam Newton is carrying a huge load on his shoulders, and doing it tremendously well. But the Panthers seem vulnerable to injuries, especially on offense. They’re already thin at the skill positions.”
  • Westgate Las Vegas Superbook – The Green Bay Packers are favorites to win the Super Bowl at 5-2, but the undefeated Carolina Panthers have 20-1 odds.
  • ESPN NFL Power Rankings – The Carolina Panthers (4-0) are ranked 8th in the power rankings behind the Arizona Cardinals (4-1), and the Seattle Seahawks (2-3).
  • Bleacher Report NFL Power Rankings – Once again the Panthers are ranked sixth and the NFC South is ranked as the worst division in the NFL.
  • USA Today Sports – According to USA Today, the Panthers aren’t for real because, “It’s not Carolina’s fault the first four teams they played this season are a combined 4-12 but the first four teams Carolina has played this season are a combined 4-12.”

Do you believe everything the media tells you? Let’s look at the numbers to see why the Carolina Panthers are undefeated…

  • Defense has only allowed 17.8 point per game (2nd)
  • Defense has 11 (8 interceptions & 3 fumbles) takeaways (5th)
  • Offense averaging 132.2 rushing yards per game (4th)
  • Offense scoring 27.0 points per game (6th)
  • CB Josh Norman has 4 interceptions (tied 1st) and 2 defensive touchdowns (1st)
  • QB Cam Newton has 88.5 passer rating (19th) and only 2 interceptions (tied 1st)

After looking at the numbers you can tell that the Carolina Panthers are leaning on their defense and rushing attack to win games. The Panthers have been successful on defense without “franchise” linebacker Luke Kuechly and defensive end Charles Johnson. Charles Johnson was asked about this success and he said it best when he said, “It’s that next man up mentality.” This is exactly right because middle linebacker A.J. Klein has taken over for Kuechly, and newly acquired defensive end Jared Allen, and Ryan Delaire are filling in well for Charles Johnson.

On offense, Cam Newton is having to shoulder the load. There are talks about him being a legit MVP candidate because he is putting the team on his back, and playing smart football. He is one of the main reasons why the Panthers are 4th in league with 132.2 rushing yards per game. If the Panthers can get healthy, this team will get better!

Who do you think this is the worst undefeated team in the NFL?
